From the pier board a yellow school bus and head out one part walking and second part multi-stop hop on/hop off visits to learn about life in Nome. Your guide on the bus is a Nome resident and will share some unique perspectives on life here, perched on the shores of the Bering Sea. This town is best known as the finish line in the famous annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Willow (near Anchorage) to Nome.
The walking portion of your tour will include inside visits to the Hospitality Center, the Bering Land Bridge National Park Headquarters, the Nome visitors center, a Gold Panning demonstration in Anvil city square and time to visit local gift shops on front street to check out the local gift shops for fun and uniquely-Alaskan souvenirs. The bus portion of your tour will Include a city tour, a Dog mushing Demonstration, a Nome Museum Visit, and a Musk Ox viewing in the local area.
Notes:
A courtesy shuttle will return you to the harbor or you can wander back on foot (approximately .75 mile). Order of the sites visited, the bus or on foot portion, and durations will vary. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf and a warm hat. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; your guide is learning, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Bus transportation is basic. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mighty musk oxen roam freely on the tundra -- keep an eye out on a short drive, and you might be lucky enough to spot a few, but wildlife viewing is not guaranteed.
