A fascinating visit to the Kushiro Marsh, Japan’s largest wetlands, begins when you board your comfortable motorcoach for a 50-minute journey to Hosooka Station. Here, you will transfer to a small bus to access the observatory and visitors center.
The Hosooka Visitors Center offers a compelling glimpse into life in the marsh, which was dedicated as a National Park in 1987. Thousands of species of plants, fish, insects and animals make the marsh their home, including Japan’s only population of endangered, red-crowned cranes. The observatory offers a spectacular panoramic view of the wetlands spreading before you, with Mt Meakan appearing serenely in the distance on clear days.
Wander the paths through this lush sanctuary; then, board the bus for a tour of the area’s three lakes – Lake Takkobu, Lake Toro and Lake Shirarutoro.
After your excursion, return to Hoskooka Station and board your motorcoach for the return to port.
Notes:
Tour requires approximately 10 minutes of walking uphill from the parking lot to the Observatory; the surface is gravel/pebbles. The view from the observatory is weather dependent.
