The city of Sokcho boasts a unique local culture. Sandwiched between Mt Seoraksan and the East Sea, it experiences both the lifestyle of the mountains and the sea. It is influenced by the nearby Abai village of Cheongho-dong, settled by North Korean refugees during the Korean War. View some folk cultures at the Sokcho City Museum and the Displaced Civilians Folk Village, where seasonal rituals and events, North Korean cultural programs, and other museum cultural programs are performed. Enjoy a non-exclusive Poongmool group performance for around 15-20 minutes.
Visit the vast Tourist & Fisheries Market, whose 450 stores include fish stalls in the basement and two above-ground levels selling food, clothing, snacks and local delicacies. Taste some dak-gangjeong (sweet and sour chicken) -- a delicious little bite.
Your last stop is Yeonggeumjeong, where large rocks rest on the beach under the Sokcho Lighthouse. Sokcho citizens enjoy summer vacation days here and fishing all year round. Cross the bridge that takes you out to the pavilion built over the rocks.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. The content of the cultural performance is determined on the day. Performances are not offered on Sundays and Mondays; otherwise, they generally operate as scheduled but are occasionally canceled for reasons beyond the tour operator's control, in which case more time to study the museum exhibits is substituted.
