Check out Sokcho's street scenes, the city's scenic mountainous surroundings, a fortress and a ferry that takes quirky to a whole new level.
The Seorak Mountain district is a designated Natural Monument and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Seorak means "big mountain snow" and is so named because of its year-round snow cap.
Visit the ruins of Gwongeumseong Fortress on Seorak Mountain, built between 1213 and 1259. You'll travel by cable car, as the path, which crosses the Biryonggyo Bridge over the ravine, is steep and rocky.
Visit the Tourist & Fisheries Market, whose 450 stores include fish stalls in the basement and two above-ground levels selling food, clothing, snacks and local delicacies.
Many people of North Korean ancestry settled in the village of Cheongho-dong during the Korean War. Small Korean-style houses line the street -- a fascinating throwback to the Seoul of the 1970s. The simple nature of the town and the serenity of the sea make for an enchanting atmosphere in Cheongho-dong. The Korean drama Autumn in My Heart was filmed here, putting it on the map for the Koreans. Don't miss the local Gaetbae ferry. This means of transportation is also a point of interest, as it is pulled across the waterway by its passengers -- including you! But don't worry, it's only 50 yards across the river, and it's much quicker than driving around the inlet.
You'll return to the ship afterward.
Notes:
Expect a delay and a long line at the Seorak cable car. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
