This short, narrated tour begins as you board a motorcoach and drive through the suburbs of Kagoshima. You’ll pass Kinko Bay and see the bronze statue of Saigo Takamori -- one of the most influential samurai in Japanese history.
Travel to Shiroyama Park -- a park in downtown Kagoshima that extends over Mount Shiroyama. With an elevation of 351 feet, the mountaintop formerly served as the site of a castle fortification. Its name, Shiroyama, literally translates to Castle Mountain.
You’ll stop at the scenic overlook at Shiroyama and catch views (weather permitting) of the city and Sakurajima Island -- one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Considered the symbol of Kagoshima, Sakurajima rises more than 3,000 feet above the waters of Kagoshima Bay. The volcano has erupted many times in recorded history and is still active.
Return to the pier by coach.
Notes:
Tour requires walking approximately five minutes each way from the coach parking area to the hill. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour sequence may vary. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day.
