Set out for an afternoon at the Kowloon Markets, where truth is stranger than fiction.
You'll begin with a visit to the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden. This charming Chinese-style garden is the favorite gathering place of Hong Kong's songbird owners, who carry their beloved pets in intricately-carved cages. It's the see-and-be-seen scene for avian aficionados. All manner of beautiful birds are found here, as well as an intriguing selection of traditional bird-keeping paraphernalia.
Next, transfer to the Flower Market -- easily one of Hong Kong's most colorful street markets. This is a jungle of exotic blossoms, luck-bringing houseplants, and sweet scents found in more than 50 shops. It's fun to walk through the market admiring the huge variety of flowers and plants for sale -- some are old favorites, but others will leave you stymied.
Your final stop is at the Ladies Market, whose focus is difficult to pin down, as it seems virtually every imaginable consumer good can be purchased here.
