This morning, visit the Goryokaku Tower to view the fort's graceful pentagonal structure. It was built in 1864 to defend Hokkaido and is now surrounded by a public park.
Walk to the Hakodate Bugyosho, or Magistrate’s Office, opened in 2010 in the middle of Goryokaku Park. It was rebuilt as a faithful copy of the original building using traditional methods. Remove your shoes, in keeping with Japanese custom, and step inside the building to view the historical exhibits.
You’ll visit the Hakodate Morning Market, comprised of more than 250 stalls selling fresh seafood. It's a great opportunity to mingle with the locals and get a feel for the bustle of local commerce.
After lunch at a local restaurant, take the aerial cableway up Mt Hakodate. From the top, you can look back over the Hakodate Peninsula, viewing the city, the ocean and an endless panorama.
Back in town, you will visit the Hakodate Museum of Northern People, housed in the former Bank of Japan building (1926) and exhibiting precious artifacts of the Ainu or Aleut people.
Return to the ship at the end of your tour.
Notes:
The aerial cableway operates weather permitting; the tour coach will be used to ascend the mountain if the cableway is closed. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. You must remove your shoes at the Hakodate Magistrate's Office. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Tour order may vary. As the Morning Markets are within walking distance from the ship pier, some groups will visit the markets first by walking, then continue on the remainder of the tour. Group may be split over multiple lunch venues.
