The Spirited Garden of Bunjae Arpia, renamed in 2007 to coincide with its opening as an International Garden, was first planted in 1963 in a rocky wasteland. It was developed single-handedly by a humble farmer and has since been visited by many high-profile public figures. Currently, about 400 planted trees are on display here, along with hundreds of potted plants. Take in the various features of the garden, including stone walls and stacked stone towers made with Jeju volcanic stones. The largest artificial waterfalls in Jeju are found here, and a pond that is home to some alarmingly large koi carp.
Mount Hallasan is the tallest mountain in South Korea. The summit of this dormant volcano is a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The .8-mile Eoseungsaengak Trail is the shortest hiking route on Mount Hallasan. You will start at the Visitor Center and hike up to the summit for panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see Chujado Island, Biyangdo Island, and Seongsan Ilchulbong in the distance. Atop the mountain is the Tochika Japanese military communication facility (1945), whose underground tunnels and chambers are no longer open to visitors.
Notes:
The hike is about 30 minutes each way. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. The path is steep in places and is comprised of mostly uneven, rocky surfaces.
