A 40-minute panoramic drive from the pier brings you to the Mari Mari Cultural Village, where the cultural diversity of Sabah is on display. Set among a tropical fruit orchard, with a babbling river flowing through the middle, the village will take you on a journey back in time to the days of the legendary headhunters and other indigenous peoples of Borneo.
Visit homes showcasing the diverse ethnicities of Sabah. Each home was built by descendants of the tribes it represents, and offers a truly genuine cultural encounter.
Acquaint yourself with each tribe and learn about their modern-day lives. As you walk through the village, you will find demonstration huts where the daily activities of yesteryear come to life -- the making of a blowpipe, starting a fire from the Polod tree, and tattooing and its inherent symbolism.
There are also stalls offering Sabah delicacies, where you can taste herbal drinks and rice wine, and learn how to cook chicken in bamboo.
Your visit ends with a simple demonstration of traditional dances with the famous Murut Megunatip, or bamboo dance, as the finale.
Notes:
Wear insect repellent, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to protect against insect bites. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
