Beppu Port is located on the east coast of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s main islands. Constructed in 1870, it has been a major transport hub for the Seto Inland Sea since the 1950s. In addition to the attractively developed harborfront, the city of Beppu boasts a number of attractions. The most famous are its 2,500 onsens, the largest collection of hot springs in Japan. You'll also find hot-water, mud, sand and steam baths, as well as the unique Eight Hells—volcanic pits of boiling water and mud and a spouting geyser. But don't expect to bathe in these springs; the water temperature can reach 150 degrees Celsius (302 degrees Fahrenheit). Anyone interested in handicrafts should visit the Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center, with displays showcasing local craftsmanship and workshops where you can make your own bamboo creation. For an overview of the city, head to Beppu City Global Tower's observatory, which offers 360-degree views. The port is also a gateway to two other points of interest in this part of Kyushu: Just outside the main city you'll find the popular Takasakiyama Monkey Park, home to some 1,500 wild macaques, and the Umitamago Aquarium.
