This comprehensive tour of Aomori begins with a visit to the Sannai Maruyama ruins that date back more than 4,000 years to the Jomon period. An exhibition room holds various artifacts from the site. The ruins were revealed during excavations for a baseball stadium in 1992.
Continue to the Showa Daibutsu (Big Buddha). At 70 feet tall, this landmark stands on Kuwabara Hill and is the city’s symbol of wisdom, kindness and inner power. The statue weighs 220 tons.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you're in for some entertainment. You'll see the Nebuta-no-Ie Warasse Museum's collection of giant illuminated floats used in the Aomori Nebuta Festival and then enjoy a short film explaining the festival on display.
Enjoy shopping for local specialty products at ASPAM (the Aomori Shopping & Product Mansion) -- a 15-story triangular building packed to the gills with products, some of which are familiar and others you never knew existed.
Notes:
The Experience Show is not exclusive to Holland America Line guests, and seating is limited. Some guests may have to stand during the performance. This tour requires a long walk at The Sannai Maruyama ruins.
