Explore Senshu Park, once the site of the 17th-century Kubota Castle. Today, it's acclaimed as one of Japan's 100 Most Beautiful Parks. Although the castle is gone, the remnants of a watchtower and moat remain, as well as a reconstructed castle gate, set among lovely fields of flowers and trees.
You'll then head to the Akita City Folklore & Performing Arts Center. The Akita Kanto Festival, held in August, is a harvest festival. You'll see the dozens of paper lanterns, called kanto, and visit an Old Kaneko family home next to the Arts Center. Built at the end of the 19th century, the home and warehouse recreate an Edo-Period store.
Notes:
Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Participants must be able to walk approximately 2.5 miles. Terrain includes cobblestones, flat ground, and approximately 84 steps in total. You will not enter the castle; you will view it from the exterior only. You must remove your shoes at the Kaneko family home. Tour order may vary.
