This half-day excursion offers a little bit of everything you're looking for on vacation: sightseeing, eating and shopping.
Begin at the Akita City Akarenga (Red Brick) Folk Museum, showcasing the works of two celebrated local artisans -- wood-block printer Katsuhira Tokushi, known for his bold color cdhoices, an metal worker Sekiya Shiro, whose graceful sculptures of bronze, silver and gold are renowned. The building is a work of art in itself, and you'll enjoy the architectural details, elegant archways and intricate tiling.
Then, it's on to the Akita Public Market, a lively indoor shopping venue filled with colorful stalls. Purchase delicacies to eat (at your own expense) while you hunt for souvenirs.
Tour the Akita Sake Brewery facility. Akita Prefecture is known for its high-quality rice, earning it the nickname -- the Empire of Beautiful Sake. Learn the step-by-step distilling process and sample sake before returning to the pier.
Notes:
At the Sake brewery, the actual process of making sake cannot be viewed for sanitary reasons. Do not wear perfume or fur while visiting the sake brewery. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. The Akita City Folklore Museum occupies two buildings, one of which has no elevator. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Tour sequence may vary.
