A panoramic drive brings you to Aoshima island, just under a mile in circumference and connected by bridge to the mainland. Pristine beaches and the unusual Onino Sentakuita (the Devil's Washboard) rock formations make it a National Natural Monument. The island's only structure -- the Aoshima Shrine -- is believed to date back to the 9th-century Heian period. You can purchase (at your own expense) small discs to throw at a target for good luck.
The Phoenix Road Station is a singularly beautiful rest area. A rather fascinating store here sells snacks, seasonal produce and souvenirs. You'll have time to shop and take in the astounding view.
Head to the Shochu Brewery. Shochu is a very popular beverage in Japan, similar to the rice wine called sake. A brewery tour introduces you to this local beverage and explains the distilling process. A tasting concludes the experience.
Notes:
Participants must walk approximately 300 yards to cross the stone bridge to Aoshima Island. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars.
