Le Conte Glacier, located in a stunningly beautiful fjord, is 21 miles long and is the southernmost tidewater access glacier in North America. It is extremely active, with regular calving events, and is famous for its "shooters" (massive submarine icebergs dramatically rising to the surface). The area is rich in history to generations of Alaska Native tribes, and your guides will share it with you.
Travel by jet boat through a gorgeous landscape and venture through a jaw-dropping fjord, complete with icebergs, gushing waterfalls, and dramatic granite cliffs to the glacier face. Enjoy a snack of wine, locally smoked salmon, cheese, and crackers as you float in front of the glacier, listening for the thundering of the glacier calving. Watch for harbor seals resting on the icy, aquamarine blue or snowy white icebergs, and bring your binoculars to search for mountain goats dotting the granite cliffs hundreds of feet above you.
Notes:
Guests who are pregnant or have a back or neck condition are not allowed to participate. Not advisable for guests with significant mobility limitations or vertigo. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. Tour operates subject to tidal conditions. Access to the face of the glacier face depends on ice conditions; calving may be seen but is not guaranteed. There is a restroom on one of the boats. All participating boats will meet at the face of the glacier for the picnic. While there, the boats raft up, and all guests will then have access to the boat with the restroom. If you require frequent use of restroom facilities, please advise the Shore Excursions team on board. Terrain includes a marine ramp from the pier to the boat, which can be very steep at low tide. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Maximum weight is 300 lbs.
