Travel protected waters in a covered, heated cabin on a beautiful 35-mile jet boat ride. Your destination is a rich nature experience and exploration of nature at the renowned Anan Wildlife Observation area.
Your guide provides expert local naturalist interpretation as you take in the forest, pristine shoreline and waterfalls around you while keeping an eye out for wildlife and marine mammals. Your guide is a local Wrangell resident with extensive wilderness experience and historical knowledge.
Arriving at Anan Creek, disembark the boat near the lagoon, where early summer brings one of Alaska's largest pink salmon runs. Meet your local Native cultural host, who will describe the fascinating history of the Alaska Native people. Walk about 45 minutes (.5 mile) each way over a rustic trail to the observation area, learning more about this special rainforest and its intact ecosystem.
A snack and beverage are served when you're back on the boat after your hike.
Notes: Participants must be in good physical condition with no balance concerns. There are more than 300 stairs along the trail. Terrain includes boardwalks with several sets of narrow stairs and bridges. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. The boat and trail are not wheelchair accessible. Total walking distance is one mile. Conditions change with the weather, and the trail can be slippery. Wear sturdy, non-skid, water-resistant walking shoes. There is no dock at the trailhead; you must climb out of the boat onto the rocky shoreline and stairs. At low tide, the shoreline is slippery. Bring rain gear and an umbrella. Tour operates only before or after the regular bear season. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wildlife sightings are a possibility but are not guaranteed. Minimum age is 6 years.
