This option of the Musher's Camp & Sled Dog Experience is for guests overnighting in Skagway.
Experience Alaska's state sport—dog mushing. On this dry land (no snow) adventure you will take an exhilarating sled ride pulled by a team of powerful Alaskan huskies, learn about the adventurous sport of dog mushing from genuine mushers. Each summer this camp is home to many mushers who bring their dogs to train for various winter activities. In fact, all the dogs at the camp are owned by year-round mushers, some of whom have competed in world-renowned races such as the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest. Your journey begins with an entertaining historic tour through downtown Skagway, and along nine miles of stunning coastline to the musher's camp in Dyea. Next, hop into a specialized Unimog for an exciting ride up a rugged mountain road, surrounded by glacially fed streams and waterfalls. At the top, a musher will greet you with a custom-designed wheeled summertime sled and a team of very excited Alaskan huskies. Feel the power of these strong dogs as they whisk you down a mile-long, zigzagging trail deep in the Tongass National Forest. After the ride, spend a bit of time with the dog team, then climb back into the Unimog and enjoy the adventurous ride to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the Dyea tidal flats. Depending on the time of year, you might see eagles, bears, seals, horseback riders, wild flowers, and of course snow-capped mountains. The Unimog will then bring you to the Kennel Talk. This is where mushers share their passion for dog sledding and answer the most frequently asked questions about the sport. In the Kennel Talk, you’ll hear all the fascinating answers and you’ll also have plenty of time to play with the puppies. Your handling them and showing them affection helps to socialize these future athletes, which is essential to their racing success. A crackling fire, drinks, and a unique gift shop round out your visit to this spectacular Alaskan setting.
