Dungeness crab is delicate and sweet -- a taste of it alone is worth the trip to Alaska. Because George Inlet is a perfect and beautiful place to sample this delicacy, this adventure involves taking a floatplane from the Tongass Narrows to a wilderness lodge. Below you is a glimpse of the bustling community of Ketchikan -- home to more floatplanes than any other port in the world -- as well as views of the spectacular mountains of the Tongass National Forest. In-flight narration explains the historical importance of the floatplane, as well as the many landmarks below.
You will land at the remote George Inlet Lodge. Your host greets you here with a delicious smoked salmon snack to enjoy while (s)he describes the colorful history of the lodge.
Feast on all-you-can-eat Dungeness crab and melted butter, with beverages, in the Oceanside Dining Room. Round out your meal with a rich, creamy cheesecake and Alaska blueberry sauce.
The rest of your journey is a narrated coastal drive back to the ship, passing totems, a fish hatchery and the Coast Guard station.
