Embark on a whale-watching adventure to the historic Sentinel Island Lighthouse. Relax in a heated cabin with a cup of hot coffee and enjoy outside viewing areas while watching for humpback whales, Steller sea lions, Dall's porpoise, bald eagles and other marine animals. During your cruise, learn about whales and the history of area lighthouses. While on board, enjoy locally-made Alaska fudge, granola bars, caribou sausage sticks, coffee/tea and bottled water.
Upon arrival at Sentinel Island, you will take a scenic walk with amazing views of Lynn Canal and the surrounding islands and waterways. As you approach the lighthouse, reflect on its long role in maritime history since its construction in 1902. Climb the tower to inspect the beacon and take in the vista across Lynn Canal. Imagine the isolated life of a "wickie" -- a lighthouse keeper -- and consider that the usual stint here was at least a few years.
Back on the boat, it's a short ride to Yankee Cove, where you will meet up with your driver and enjoy a narrated trip. View Mendenhall Glacier from the Brotherhood Bridge viewpoint to bring together Alaska's history, wildlife and epic scenery.
Notes:
Tour sequence may vary. The operator of this tour guarantees that a whale will be sighted on this excursion from May 15 through September 15 with participants receiving a $50 cash refund from the tour operator after the tour if a whale is not sighted. Views of Mendenhall Glacier are weather-dependent. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day.
