Experience a thrilling wilderness adventure in an open-air, high-speed boat that takes you along the rugged coastline in search of wildlife.
Gear up with a survival suit; then, board a 27-foot RIB (rigid inflatable boat) designed for optimal maneuverability. The fresh ocean air rushes past, and the beauty and majesty of Alaska will take your breath away.
During this 1.5-hour thrill ride, the skipper adjusts the route based on weather conditions and wildlife viewing potential.
Enjoy up-close views of waterfalls, tidal flats and the abundant wildlife that lives on the rugged shoreline. Watch for coastal brown bears and Sitka black-tail deer. Keep an eye out for marine life such as sea lions, sea otters, seals, humpback whales and orcas. Bald eagles and waterfowl may surprise you along the way.
At opportune times, the skipper will stop the boat to tell you about what makes these waterways so important to the local Native Tlingit people. Hear a Tlingit story related to the area or learn about the subsistence lifestyle that continues to be a way of life in Hoonah.
Return to the dock with a greater appreciation of the natural landscape and a sense of awe. Enjoy a hot beverage before returning to your ship, or explore on your own around the cannery and nature trail at Icy Strait Point.
Notes:
Minimum age is 10 years. Participants must be able to walk without assistance. You will be provided with a Coast Guard-approved survival suit, which you will wear over your own clothing (mandatory); this will keep you warm and dry throughout your adventure. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Ride will be bumpy. Guests who are pregnant or have a back or neck condition are not allowed to participate. Waiver must be signed and medical conditions disclosed.
