View some historic points of interest on a panoramic drive through downtown Anchorage. Your driver tells the story of how Anchorage went from Tent City to the largest city in Alaska.
The 26-acre Alaska Native Heritage Center shares the rich heritage of Alaska's eleven major cultural groups. Learn about Alaska Native culture firsthand with a private Elder Talk experience. A respected tribal leader will discuss the past, present, and future of Native villages, rights, challenges, triumphs, and concerns.
You'll also have time to listen and learn about Native traditions from knowledgeable Culture Bearers. Sample modern Akutaq -- a new take on a traditional ice cream dessert.
Explore other parts of the Center at your own pace. Visit the Ch'k'iqadi Gallery, the Hall of Cultures featuring unique and dynamic exhibits, and the theatre with its variety of movies, including Stories Given, Stories Shared -- an introductory film sharing the many different cultures of Alaska Native people and the landscape, climates, and regions they call home. Outdoors, the Village Sites exhibit features six authentic, life-sized Native dwellings with interpretive panels.
Notes:
This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Anchorage/Seward. Operates mid-September to October only. Terrain includes unpaved paths that can become muddy and challenging in inclement weather. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes.
