During the early 20th century, wealthy fishermen built so-called "Herring Mansions" of Otaru. Visit the finest of them — the former Aoyama Villa, built in 1923. This two-story mansion resembles a Japanese castle in miniature. Its interior features lacquered floors and corridors of zelkova wood. Note the intricacy of the sliding doors, which are adorned with the works of the premier painters and calligraphers of the day.
Next, step aboard the Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway (a 30-person gondola) for a ride to the top of Mt Tengu. This landmark offers a panoramic view of Otaru Port and Ishikari Bay and, on a clear day, as far as Mt Shokanbetsu and the Shakotan Peninsula.
Your final destination is the city's historic Canal District. Developed in 1914, the canal is lined with restored stone warehouses that today house fancy shops, boutiques, cafés, and fine restaurants. Enjoy some free time here to explore.
Afterward, reboard the motorcoach for the short ride back to the pier.
Notes:
Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour requires walking approximately 10 minutes from the coach parking area to the Otaru Canal. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, and steps. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse. Tour sequence may vary. The Tenguyama Ropeway operates weather permitting. Expect to wait in line at the ropeway. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day.
