Set out on a 1.5 hour scenic drive through the ruggedly beautiful Scottish landscape. Travel south along the coastal road with stunning views that look out across the glistening waters of the Firth of Clyde and past the forbidding-looking ruins of Dunure Castle, which dates back to the 13th century.
Step back in time as you arrive at the splendid cliff-top Culzean Castle. Surrounded by wooded grounds and elegant gardens, it was converted from a fortress by famed Scottish architect Robert Adam in the 18th century for the 10th Earl of Cassillis who used it for entertaining. As you enter this lavishly furnished castle, view the mahogany wall clock dating from the reign of George III, and a magnificent display of arms. Marvel at the Saloon with its contrasting characteristics of 18th-century elegance set against the wild, untamed scenery of sea, sky and mountain. Immediately below the windows? 150 feet down - are the rocks and breakers of the Firth of Clyde, and far across the water you'll see the low line of the Mull of Kintyre, the southwestern-most section of the long Kintyre Peninsula.
Continue your journey to the charming seaside town of Largs, known for its rich Viking history and picturesque coastal views and vibrant seafront and promenade. Located on the Firth of Clyde, explore the town’s main street, where a variety of well-known stores and charming shops await you. Discover the best of Scottish woollens, knitwear, and quality merchandise. Largs is home to the Vikingar Center, which offers an interactive look into Viking history and the historic St. John's Church.
Largs is also famous for Nardini’s, an iconic Art Deco ice cream parlour and café that has been serving delicious treats since 1935. Largs is a delightful destination for those seeking a taste of Scotland's coastal charm.
Notes:
Travel time is approximately 1.5 hours each way. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You will have time to purchase lunch at your own expense during the tour. Tour requires walking over graveled paths in the gardens and around the Castle as well as some uneven walkways and steps. The amount of walking during the free time in Largs is at guests own discretion.
