This tour starts with a drive westward along the coast to the small town of Ston--the oyster capital of Croatia. This tiny town is often called the "little Dubrovnik," as it too is surrounded by magnificent walls dating back to 1317 and completed in the 16th century. It is one of the longest defensive walls in the world. However, in Croatia, the name Ston is synonymous with oysters, as oyster farms surround the whole area. Ston was a major fort of the Ragusan Republic, whose defensive walls were regarded as a notable feat of medieval architecture.
Its former value as a salt city is confirmed even today in the plants of the oldest active salt works in the world. These saltworks have remained faithful to the tradition and to the natural way of salt production, which has not changed since remote ages. You will continue to Mali Ston and board a local boat that will take you to oyster and mussel beds. Your host will welcome you aboard and introduce you to the oyster and mussel farming industry in this area. Learn about oyster farming and oyster and mussel production. will have the opportunity to taste freshly harvested shellfish and see the cooking of famous Buzara with mussels before you return to the ship.
