Cairns is a tropical city in North Queensland with a colorful background. Only 140 years old, it was first settled by Europeans during the gold rush. Irish, English, French, Danish, Italian and Chinese fortune hunters braved the crocodile-infested waters, the dense rain forests, the heavy monsoonal rains, the 'biteys', the stingers and the heat to build what is still the last city on the road going north from Sydney. All sorts of adventurers followed, including escapees and alternative-lifestyle seekers.
Prior to European settlement, the Yirrganydji and the Yidinji Aboriginal people walked this land, and their history is an intrinsic part of Cairns' story.
Discover this chic tourism town on a walk with your guide. Despite the fun and upmarket array of cafés and shops, Cairns still boasts a touch of the wild, weird, whimsical and wonderful. Your guide will point out the historic buildings, natural sights and special places that complete this tropical paradise.
Step inside at the new Cairns Museum to dig deeper into the tales of this city. Learn about tropical cyclones and discover how a thriving gold rush center-turned-sugar town has successfully morphed into a tourism mecca. The museum houses four permanent exhibits and one temporary gallery, showcasing displays and storylines created by a team of professional curators and designers backed by local volunteers.
