Leave the pier by coach to delve deep into the island's rich, fascinating culture as you visit the temple town of Kataragama. Just a small village in medieval times, Kataragama is now a fast-developing township in the deep south of Sri Lanka. In a country of many different religious beliefs, what makes Kataragama special is that it is a site of religious importance to Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims alike.
Visit the Temple to Skanda -- the Hindu god of war. With six faces and twelve arms, Skanda is believed to be a benevolent god and is worshipped at the beginning of new ventures. In spite of the differences of caste and creed, all Sri Lankans show great reverence for Skanda (also called Kataragama). They honor him as a very powerful deity, who can help them overcome problems and achieve success in their ventures. They believe that Skanda actually exists and is vested with extraordinary powers.
There is also a mosque on the premises and, therefore, it is of importance to the local Muslims.
Skanda is believed to be one of Sri Lanka's four guardian deities, so he is also worshipped by the Buddhist population. This site was visited by Buddha during his lifetime and the Bo tree behind the temple is believed to be one of the saplings of the Bodhi tree under which Buddha gained enlightenment. Pilgrims to the site believe their requests will be granted. As you explore, you will witness a zeal of faith and worship seldom seen elsewhere.
