Leave the city of Edinburgh behind as you travel by coach into the Scottish countryside to Swanston Farm. This working farm keeps a fantastic herd of Highland cows — the kind that always seem to be having a bad hair day.
Today you'll be channeling your inner Scot and checking your preconceived knowledge of both language and cattle at the door. You must say "coo" (not cow) if you wish to be understood in this part of the world; you must take "wee walk" if you are to meet the coos; and you must keep your hands to yourself, as these magnificent beasts live in the wild and their curiosity about your hands may result in a drenching lick or an experimental nip.
Set off with the farmer across 300 acres of hill land above the farm to meet these beautiful, enormous, hilariously coiffed creatures. You will get quite close to the Highland cows, and your guide will explain how they are raised. Learn about some of their personalities and why they are as curious about you as you are about them. Take a moment also to admire the views across Pentland Regional Park.
On the farm, you will also meet Swanston's Texel-cross breeding sheep and free-range hens.
Ready to refuel? Take a seat in the Swanston Farm Brasserie and savor a traditional cream tea (scones, jam, cream and coffee or tea). These are made with some of the farm's own produce for the freshest taste and texture.
Return to the ship in South Queensferry with great memories and some inspiration for your next trip to the hair salon.
