"Undesirable Polish elements" inspired the Nazi authorities of the Free Town of Gdansk to begin their ghoulish activities in Gdansk long before World War II broke out.
As far back as 1936, the Gdansk Police watched and monitored various Polish "persons of interest," and compiled materials that later served as a basis to prepare lists of those to be arrested. In 1939, a special SS troop was established to site and organize detention camps. The moment the Nazis invaded Poland, the arrests were underway, including an initial group of 150 persons transported to Stutthof. Thus, the tragic story of Stutthof Concentration Camp began.
Today, you will learn about the camp, the gruesome ideology behind it, and the 65,000 souls that perished at the hands of their persecutors. Visit the camp headquarters, administration and canteen buildings, prisoner barracks, the death gate, the crematorium, the gas chamber, and the permanent exhibit — all left standing in tribute to Stutthof's victims.
In Gdansk's Old Town, a thousand years of history have left a collection of buildings and monuments designed in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Sit down to a two-course lunch; then, set off on a guided walk past buildings decorated with elaborate façades and crowned by ornate gables.
View the Town Hall, Long Market and the beautiful 15th-century merchants' palace of Artus Court. Pause at Neptune's Fountain to admire this monumental symbol of Gdansk's Hanseatic history, and walk down to the waterfront canal. Then turn up
Mariacka or St Mary's Street, which delights its visitors with its lively atmosphere, quaint shops and lovely terraced buildings.
