Board a yellow school bus and head out for a tour that is one part walking and one part multi-stop visits to learn about life in Nome.
Your guide is a Nome resident who offers perspectives on life in a small village perched on the shores of the Bering Sea. This town is best known as the finish line in the famous annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Willow (near Anchorage) to Nome.
The walking portion of your tour includes inside visits to the Hospitality Center, the Bering Land Bridge National Park Headquarters, the Nome Visitor Center, a gold-panning demonstration in Anvil City Square, and time for shopping on Front Street for fun and uniquely Alaskan souvenirs.
The bus portion of your tour will include a city orientation, a dog-mushing demonstration, a visit to the Nome Museum, and a viewing of the mighty musk oxen that roam freely on the tundra.
Notes:
A courtesy shuttle will return you to the harbor, or you can wander back on foot (approximately ¾ mile). Tour sequence may vary. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; you are trading breadth of guide experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any operational surprises that may crop up. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
