Walk through the beautifully-landscaped Kairakuen Garden. This famous Japanese garden was established by the Mito clan in 1842. You'll also experience a traditional Japanese tea tasting during your visit.
See the Kodakan -- an old clan school similar in function to a modern university. The students of this school learned not only traditional subjects and military arts, but also specialized disciplines such as medicine and astronomy.
Step inside the Tokugawa Museum. The collection includes extensive holdings left by the first Shogun, Ieyasu Togugawa. There are also around 30,000 treasures from various descendants and branches of the Mito family.
Notes:
There is a 10-minute walk from the bus parking lot to the Kairakuen Garden. You must remove your shoes for the tea ceremony and at the Kodakan. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Traffic can be unpredictable. The driver will do his/her best to keep moving safely. Your patience is greatly appreciated. Delays occasionally extend tour duration. At the Tokugawa Museum, interpretive signs are in Japanese only; however, guests using a smart phone can access an explanation in English. Blooms in Kairakuen Garden is depending on seasons.
