Leave the port of Alicante to discover this city whose past and present are inextricably linked with North Africa for historic and economic reasons.
You will cross the center of town en route to the Castle of Santa Barbara, an aging fortress built in the 16th century. Visit the best-preserved areas, such as the Main Tower (Torre del Homenaje) and the Englishmen's bastions.
From 500 feet above sea level, take in the beautiful view of the city, the bay and your ship. Inside the castle, admire some interesting Iberian archeological findings, which demonstrate that people lived there even before the arrival of the Romans.
Drive down the city's main boulevard — the Explanada de España.
Walk to Canalejas Park, the oldest park in the Spanish city of Alicante. It is located parallel to Loring Avenue and the marina, and it sits adjacent to the iconic Explanada de España.
The park was designed in 1886 by architect José González Altés, built over the city’s former shipyard area. It is dedicated to the memory of José Canalejas, a Galician politician who served as Alicante’s parliamentary representative and later became President of Spain.
In front of the park stands the Monument to Canalejas, while inside the park visitors can find the well-known fountain called “El Niño Flautista” (The Little Flutist). The park also features two pairs of stone dogs and lions, originally belonging to the historic Buenavista Estate located in San Juan de Alicante. Our guided walking tour continues entering the Old Town, which is closed to vehicles. Town Hall Square and the Town Hall itself will surprise you with its delicate lines and Baroque style.
The Cathedral of Alicante, better known as the Church of San Nicolás de Bari, comes with an impressive façade that is one of the finest remaining examples of Spanish religious Baroque.
Enjoy some free time to stroll in the city and perhaps try a horchata — the traditional local drink made from tiger nut (earth almond) before you return to the ship.
