Embark on an extraordinary journey to discover the iconic highlights of Cairo.
A drive through the desert transfers you to the Egyptian capital. Your adventure begins at the magnificent Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. Here, an expert Egyptologist will guide you through its wonders, starting with the impressive "hanging obelisk," suspended by four columns. Standing beneath it, you'll marvel at its rare cartouche of King Ramses II, hidden for more than 3,500 years.
Inside, you'll encounter the awe-inspiring colossal statue of King Ramses II, crafted from red granite, weighing 83 tons, and towering more than 30 feet tall. Ascend the grand staircase to view a remarkable statue collection of renowned pharaohs, including King Senusret I, and explore 55 artifacts that illustrate the "journey towards eternity."
Conclude your museum visit with a stroll through the vibrant retail area, featuring an array of shops and delightful dining options. Savor a delicious lunch at one of the museum's premier restaurants, offering a relaxing break and plenty of people-watching.
Next, you'll visit the legendary Pyramids of Giza, standing as breathtaking sentinels in the desert. The Great Pyramid of Cheops, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, astounds with its 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing 2½ tons. Constructed around 2000 BC, these marvels defy imagination. You'll also encounter the enigmatic Sphinx, with its lion's body and human face, staring eastward with a mysterious expression. Carved from natural rock, this iconic monument measures 190 feet in length and 66 feet in height.
As your incredible outing concludes, relax during the approximately 3½-hour journey back to the Port of Alexandria, reflecting on the day's unforgettable sights and experiences.
Notes:
Service animals, including dogs, are not permitted at the Pyramids. Travel time to Cairo is approximately 3 to 3½ hours each way. Motorcoaches are required to travel in a police-escorted convoy and may be subject to security delays; your patience is appreciated. Time permitting, participants may have the opportunity to enter the Cheops Pyramid independently (at your own expense; approximately US$10); however, this is not advisable for individuals with claustrophobia or heart and respiratory conditions, as the interior is hot and stuffy, requiring visitors to bend and crouch at times. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, stones, inclines, gravel, sand, and many steps. Photography/video is not permitted inside the Pyramids of Giza. Modest attire is recommended; knees, shoulders, and midriffs must be covered. Tight-fitting, transparent, or translucent clothing is not advisable. Please err on the side of conservatism with your attire. This is a "preview visit" to the Grand Egyptian Museum, allowing you to experience parts of the museum as they are opened during the soft-opening period. The wider museum opens at a later date.
