In the Guadalcanal dialect, Betikama means “beside the big water” -- its relevance will soon become apparent.
Betikama is a national High School in the Solomon Islands and is set in a secluded valley. Its on-site museum holds World War II memorabilia and artifacts. There are also exhibits expounding on local culture from the Solomons’ nine provinces.
Perhaps even more importantly, Betikama is famous for its student choir -- angelic voices harmonizing perfectly. Today, you will experience listening to a traditional bamboo band and the student choir -- an extraordinary opportunity.
Explore the museum to connect with this nation that still bears the scars of the Second World War. Listen carefully as your guide explains the cultural significance of the museum’s provincial artifacts, as these are woven into the American dream of freedom and democracy by way of the bloody, brutal mutual history of the Solomon Islands and the USA.
A skillful carver will demonstrate his art and give you the chance to try your hand at it if you wish.
It’s not the Pacific without a coconut -- enjoy a chilled piece of this delicious and nutritious fruit before you return to the pier.
