Day 1 (L/D) Laem Chabang - Ayutthaya - Bangkok
Leave the ship in Laem Chabang and set out to visit the ancient capital. It is a lovely three-hour scenic drive from Laem Chabang to the historic city of Ayutthaya -- a step back into the days when Thailand was Siam and Ayutthaya was the capital from 1350 to 1767.
Enjoy lunch at a local hotel; then, reboard your coach to explore some of this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s most famous and interesting ruins. Wat Yai Chai Mongkon -- the Great Monastery of Auspicious Victory against the Burmese -- was constructed by King U-thong in AD 1357. Wat Chai Wattanarm is a replica of Angkor Wat. Wat Mahathat is one of Ayutthaya’s oldest temples. Don’t miss the Buddha in a Bodhi tree.
A one-hour drive returns you to Bangkok, where you will check in at your hotel. In the evening, enjoy dinner with a Thai dance show. Return to your hotel after a pleasant evening.
Hotel: Pullman Hotel G Bangkok Silom (or similar)
Day 2 (B/L) Bangkok - Laem Chabang
After breakfast at the hotel, check out and transfer to the riverside pier. Board a chartered motor launch that will take you through Bangkok’s waterway into one of the canals. See houses built on stilts and pass the Royal Barge dockyard. You will also pass by the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun), whose 259-foot spire, with magnificent multicolored porcelain-studded towers, has become part of the visual identity of Bangkok, with the Chao Praya River in the foreground.
A short walk will lead you to the most significant attractions in Thailand -- the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The temple was built according to traditional Thai beliefs from the Sukhothai era. Golden stupas, walls and pillars encrusted in shining and colorful mosaics all gleam under the sun. Admire the small but significant Phra Kaew or Emerald Buddha statue, carved from a single piece of jade -- among the most revered images of Buddha.
The buildings of the Grand Palace impart the grandeur of Thai architecture. Constructed some 220 years ago, it was the residence of the Royal Family before Chitralada Summer Palace became their permanent home. The Grand Palace is now used for ceremonial purposes.
After a delicious lunch, transfer back to the port of Laem Chabang.
Notes:
Modest attire is required for visiting temples; no fitted or collarless tops are allowed; shirts/blouses must cover shoulders; trousers must cover knees; shorts and mini-skirts are not permitted. The tour is guided; an escort from the ship’s staff may or may not also accompany the group. You must book this overland PRIOR to sailing. Tour operates subject to meeting a minimum number of participants. The cut-off date is 60 days before the ship’s call at Laem Chabang. Due to the popularity of this tour and strict booking conditions, cancellation fees start 60 days prior to the call at Laem Chabang. Accommodation is included (hotels are subject to change).
