The island of Vulcano, once called Hierò Thermessa, is one of the most interesting in the Aeolian archipelago because of its landscapes and stunning volcanic phenomena. Homer most fittingly described the island as 'the workshop of Hephaestus' -- the Greek god of fire. But it is in fact dedicated to Vulcan -- the Roman god of fire and metalworking.
Your tour begins with a boat trip around the island with a breathtaking view of the faraglioni, Grotta del Cavallo and Vulcanello. The only landing place on the island is at Porto di Levante.
You will discover that Vulcano consists of three old craters. The first, in the south between Monte Aria and Monte Saraceno, has been extinct for centuries. The Gran Cratere, on the other hand, is still active, with the last eruption occurring in 1890. Vulcanello, the third crater, is a promontory on the northeastern tip of the island. It was created almost 2,000 years ago by an eruption.
You will have two hours of free time to explore on your own. Stay at the beach for a mud bath, swim in the clear water, or follow your guide on a hike up the volcano. The climb up to the middle crater is particularly interesting and you can reach the top in less than an hour.
Near the faraglioni (isolated rocks in the sea), there is a boiling seawater phenomenon, where underwater fumaroles bubble up through the sea. The curative value of these thermal waters, together with the mud baths, have made the island famous among those seeking natural medicinal treatment.
Notes:
Tour operates weather permitting. The volcano hike is only for guests who are physically fit, as a great deal of uphill walking is involved. Guests who are allergic to sulfur should not participate. Those who wish to hike should wear sturdy shoes and bring a bottle of water. Bring your swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen and a hat. Tour operates subject to weather conditions and availability of the boat. Entrance fees to the hiking on the volcano and mud baths are not included.
