Transfer by coach and ferry to an island in the heart of Halifax Harbour. Georges Island offers spectacular views of the city and has a backstory deeply rooted in local history and folklore. You'll board a boat and circumnavigate the island for a waterside perspective. After landing, explore the island on foot in the company of a guide dressed in period costume.
For 200 years, beginning in 1746, Georges Island was a hub of military activity, when the Duc d’Anville’s ill-fated French fleet arrived in the harbor and made camp there. The British built the first fortifications and used the island as a prison for pirates and, later, for Acadians. A network of underground tunnels survives to this day.
Discover the Submarine Mining Establishment — one of only two of its kind in North America. The strategic military importance of this site cannot be overstated. You will descend hand-carved steps to the Lower Battery and traverse the network of underground tunnels and chambers that have given rise to many tales, tall and true. Once back on the mainland, meander along the boardwalk as your make your way back to the ship -approximately one mile (1½ km).
