This immersive experience blends marine discovery, cultural connection, and natural beauty for a relaxing day out in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds.
Transfer to a local pier for a warm welcomed by your guide. Board a water taxi for a 30-minute cruise across the tranquil waters of Queen Charlotte Sound. As you glide through this maritime stretch of Marlborough province, take in the sweeping views of lush hills, secluded bays, and the pretty coastline — an introduction to the region's natural beauty.
Step ashore at Lochmara, where your guide will lead you to a seaside touch tank for an up-close look at some of New Zealand's smaller marine creatures.
The adventure continues in the underwater observatory — a descent into a submerged world teeming with life. From within the observatory, enjoy crystal-clear views of native marine species such as carpet sharks, stingrays, crayfish, blue cod, eels, and diving cormorants. Your knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights and stories, bringing the underwater world to life.
Lochmara's land-based attractions include friendly farm animals, traditional Māori artwork, and peaceful surroundings. Explore at your own pace on a self-guided walk through the native bush, take a refreshing swim, or try kayaking or paddleboarding from the sandy beach. If you prefer to relax, the on-site café offers a taste of authentic Kiwi cuisine in a tranquil setting (at your own expense).
The water taxi will return you to Picton for a transfer back to the pier. Time permitting, guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Sightings vary depending on the season and the presence of predators. If you wish to swim, wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen, light clothing to act as a full cover-up for further protection from the sun, and a hat. Swim at your own risk. A good level of fitness is recommended.
