The Eastwoodhill Arboretum is a world-renowned tree collection in a park-like setting with hills, valleys, ponds and formal gardens. Founded in 1910 by Douglas Cook, the arboretum has the most comprehensive collection of Northern Hemisphere temperate trees in all of the Southern Hemisphere. Your guide, from the Friends of the Eastwoodhill Arboretum Trust, offers an informative commentary during the 45-minute drive to the arboretum.
The parched hills surrounding the Poverty Bay plains stand in stark contrast to the arboretum's lush glens and formal lawns. Numerous trails thread through the 3,500 tree species, including magnolias, oaks, spruce, maples and cherries, brought together in an unusual microclimate in which both hot- and cold-climate trees flourish. During your two hours at the arboretum, you will have several options to choose from, including a guided walk through the Homestead Garden (an easy 30-minute walk), taking an open-air four-wheel-drive guided tour, or simply strolling about the main garden armed with a detailed map.
Light refreshments are served during your visit.
