Celebrate Nagoya's history and culture with visits to a trio of beloved sites.
Nagoya Castle's Honmaru Palace offers a glimpse into the splendor that surrounded the feudal lords. Originally built in 1612, the palace was, and still is, considered a masterpiece of richly decorated gold-foil walls and screens. The palace was destroyed during World War II but has been authentically rebuilt by traditional Japanese craftsmen using traditional techniques and materials.
To appreciate Nagoyans' devotion to Buddhism, visit the Osu Kannon Temple. The temple you see today is a replica of the original, which was built in 1324. Prayer flags and red lanterns greet worshippers, and the scent of incense wafts from the main hall.
Also sacred, but this time to the Shinto religion, is the Atsuta Shrine. Established 1,900 years ago, this serene complex is considered one of Shinto's most important monuments. Take a peaceful and meditative stroll through the grounds to calm and refresh the soul.
Notes:
The main keep at Nagoya Castle is currently undergoing renovation; your tour is focused on Honmaru Palace within the castle complex. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
