At 10,000 feet tall, the Tateyama mountain range towers over beautiful Toyama Bay, which is 3,000 feet deep.
Named for the precipitous elevation difference between these two landforms, the Story of 13,000 Feet is a scenic dining train that takes you on an exceptional journey through a stunning natural environment.
Board the train at JR Toyama Station and relax over a wonderful Japanese lunch — a dining experience that encourages you to savor Toyama's four seasons. It includes fresh fish from Toyama Bay and agricultural delicacies produced from the mineral-rich farmland irrigated by snowmelt water from the Tateyama Mountains. Toyama's ever-changing scenery — your constant companion outside your picture window — enhances your rail experience. Fascinatingly, out of the 800 fish species that inhabit the Sea of Japan, about 500 of them inhabit Toyama Bay.
Leaving the train, visit the Toyama Prefecture Museum of Ink Art — an indoor, air-conditioned facility dedicated to the tradition and beauty of Japanese ink painting.
The museum displays works by contemporary artists and features a traditional garden.
End your tour with a visit to the Ikeda Yasubei Medicine Shop — a traditional pharmacy where Toyama's culture of ancient medicine remains alive and well. Your guide introduces you to its nuances through demonstrations. The clerks will demonstrate the age-old method of making pills and allow you to try your hand at this as well.
