A 90 minute coach journey brings you to Yala National Park—one of the oldest and most famous National Parks in Sri Lanka. Yala is located approximately 1,5 hours from the port of Hambantota and plays a very important role in the conservation of the country’s flora and fauna. Set in a stunning landscape of rocky outcroppings and beautiful beaches, it is home to a variety of wildlife and birds. Elephants, sloth bear, deer, wild boar and leopard are among the 32 species of mammal found here. At the park entrance transfer to a 4x4 vehicle with a local guide and spend the next three hours driving through a fraction of this 347-square-mile park, appreciating the scenic landscape. You’ll stop at the Indian Ocean, where you can stroll along the beach. The 2004 tsunami caused some severe but localized damage here, and this is clearly evident close to the shore, where a memorial stands in memory of those who lost their lives. After your drive through this wonderful nature reserve, lunch is served at a local hotel, where a naturalist will answer any questions you may have.
Notes:
Not suitable for guests with back or neck problems. Participants must be able to negotiate the high steps into the vehicle. The vehicle is covered but has open sides; wear sunscreen; bring a hat. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
