What to pack for a cruise?

Documents and essentials

  • Keep critical items with you during embarkation rather than in checked luggage

  • Required government-issued I.D.s

  • Passports and visas, if applicable

  • Travel documents and confirmations

  • Valuables and personal items

Medications

  • Plan ahead so you have uninterrupted access to needed medications throughout your cruise

  • Prescription medications in original containers

  • Extra doses in case of travel delays

  • Motion-sensitivity or nausea-relief medication, if needed

Clothing and attire

Note: Dining rooms require shirts or cover-ups and footwear indoors, and smart casual attire is appropriate. Shorts, beachwear, tank tops, and distressed jeans are not permitted in table service restaurants. Laundry service is available on board.

Footwear and comfort

Choose shoes that support walking both on board and ashore.

  • Comfortable, close-toed walking shoes

Toiletries and personal care

Staterooms include basic bath amenities (including shampoo, conditioner, and soap), but you may wish to bring personal preferences.

  • Sunscreen

  • Moisturizer

  • Bug spray

  • Toothpaste

Note: Some toiletries may also be available in The Shops on board.

Technology and electronics

Bring the essential devices and accessories you rely on during travel.

  • Mobile phones and personal devices

  • Chargers and charging cables

  • Power adapters

Note: All Holland America ships, except Volendam and Zaandam, have bedside USB outlets for charging mobile devices.

Optional extras

These items can be helpful depending on your interests and itinerary.

  • Binoculars

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Spare eyeglasses

  • Books or e-readers

  • Camera

What not to pack

Review the prohibited items list before sailing to avoid bringing restricted items.

Many commonly packed items are already available on board:

  • Hairdryers and make-up mirrors in staterooms

  • Board games and puzzles in the Crow’s Nest

  • Books in the onboard library

  • In-room entertainment

Note: Shore excursions generally provide the specialized equipment required for activities.
