Head to Carara National Park — a low mountainous area of about a thousand acres and an absolute must-see for nature lovers. This is a transitional climate zone separating the dry north from the very humid mid-Pacific coast.
Your experience of the park is interactive, as you follow the main trail on foot for an easy and interesting introduction to the forest. Those with mobility limitations or who require facilitative features will find animal sculptures, haptic maps, and Braille signs, as well as easy-access rest areas.
More than 110 bird species are found in the National Park, including anhinga, surgeon ducks, pied-billed grebes, great blue and tri-color herons and the boat-billed herons. Endangered species include scarlet macaws, yellow-billed cotingas, laughing falcons, and other birds, as well as several monkey species, other mammals and impressive reptiles and amphibians.
Board a riverboat for a ride on the famous Tarcoles River, recognized as one of the country's most important waterways for wildlife observation. Near the lush forests of Carara National Park, the Tarcoles River showcases Costa Rica's rich biodiversity. As you navigate its calm waters, keep an eye out for the impressive American crocodile. Some of the largest exemplars in Central America are often seen basking on the riverbanks. Birdwatchers may spot an extraordinary variety of species, including herons, egrets, kingfishers, roseate spoonbills, ospreys, cormorants, and many migratory (seasonal) shorebirds. Scarlet macaws, one of Costa Rica's most colorful and beloved birds, are also frequently seen near the forest canopy.
At the CROC Sky Walk Experience Center, observe crocodiles from a scenic viewing platform, enjoy a chocolate-making demonstration, and enjoy a delicious traditional lunch with Costa Rican coffee .
