If one place can be said to lie at the center of English history and embodies the romantic vision of the heartland, it is Winchester — a beautiful city surrounded by meadows and rolling chalk downs.
The Great Hall of Winchester is one of the finest surviving medieval halls in England. It is the last remaining part of what was once the mighty Winchester Castle, originally built by William the Conqueror in 1067. Under King Henry III, the Castle was reconstructed between 1222 and 1235, and the Great Hall served as a grand venue for royal banquets, court sessions, and important state gatherings. View the legendary Round Table linked to King Arthur. The table dates to the late 13th century and was painted during the reign of Henry VIII to feature a Tudor rose and the names of Arthur's knights. Measuring more than 18 feet in diameter and weighing approximately 1.2 tons, it remains a powerful symbol of chivalry and legend.
Explore the center of the ancient and royal city of Winchester on your own. This was the original home of William the Conqueror's great Domesday Book. This is also the place where Sir Walter Raleigh was tried and sentenced to death.
Winchester's shopping streets feature an array of independent shops, boutiques, and galleries alongside brand-name stores.
Notes:
The drive to Winchester is approximately 45 minutes each way. This option is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Southampton.
