Board a motorcoach for the two-hour drive to Arromanches. This modest seaside resort owes its fame to the brilliant Mulberry Operation, which was an integral part of the Allied Landing in Europe in June 1944.
With your guide, visit the remains of the artificial port built here -- it was one of the most extraordinary industrial and maritime achievements of the whole war and enabled Allied forces to land in France and begin the counter-invasion.
Purchase lunch (at your own expense) before you continue to Colleville. Here, you will find the American Museum -- the Overlord Museum -- which depicts soldiers' personal items, reconstructions, and models of the whole landing operation right up to the Liberation of Paris.
Nearby lies the American Cemetery, where more than 9,000 marble crosses stand perfectly aligned on an impressive site overlooking Omaha Beach. A memorial, inscribed with a map of the operation and preceded by a reflecting pool, stands in the central alley surrounded by trees.
You will stop at Omaha Beach for a poignant few moments at the landing site before the drive back to Cherbourg (approximately 75 minutes).
