Ancient Perge and Antalya's Archaeological Museum offer an understanding the lifestyle of early civilization in Turkey.
Perge is the finest example of a complete Roman city on the Pamphylian plain, founded by Mopsus and Calchas in the 13th century BC. Perge flourished as a center of the coin minting industry. Artemis was the city's most important deity, and her image was commonly used in art and on coins. See the Roman Gate on the outer wall, the Baths complex in the west courtyard, and the Hellenistic gate leading to a horseshoe-shaped courtyard. Take in the marketplace — once Perge's retail central.
Continue to Antalya's renowned Archaeological Museum, whose various rooms display pottery, coins, mosaics, sculptures, costumes, sarcophagi and numerous artifacts found in nearby caves. A nomad's tent and several rooms from a typical Ottoman household showcase the lifestyle eras of the region. Statues of the Greek gods and Emperors Hadrian and Septius Serverus are in found the Classics Hall. A stunning mosaic from Xanthos depicts the infant Achilles being dangled by his mother over the River Styx. Other exhibits include Stone Age relics from the Karain Caves, and a comprehensive ethnographical collection.
