At the Valley of A Thousand Hills, experience modern and ancient African tribal culture in the traditional and spectacular homeland of the Zulu people. This geographically astounding area was shaped first by the winding Mgeni River, then by the culture of the Zulu tribes, and finally by the arrival of Europeans.
As you journey into the valley, you will learn how these tranquil rolling hills belie the blood-soaked drama that unfolded almost two centuries ago when the Zulu King, Shaka, known to historians as the Black Napoleon, subjugated the tribes that today make up the Kingdom of the Zulu. Your visit to Phezulu allows you to discover firsthand the intricacies, ethnic customs and beliefs of the Zulu people.
Enjoy an energetic, costumed song and dance performance by the renowned Gasa clan. Dances of courtship and betrothal, of the throwing of the sangoma's (traditional healer's) bones, of war and of birth, set to the mesmerizing beat of the Zulu drum, will take you into another world.
You'll also see Phezulu's impressive reptile park, learn about the crocodiles and take home vivid images of some of Africa's most notorious snakes.
Enjoy a snack, including a cup of tea or coffee and some homemade scones, before taking some time to browse among a wealth of ethnic handicrafts for sale in the well-stocked curio shop. The selection includes pottery, Zulu fabric art, woodcarving, beadwork and curios.
Finally, head via the National Highway back to the pier in Durban.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Participants must negotiate stairs and/or uneven surfaces. The village has mostly gravel terrain, which can be slightly muddy after heavy rainfall. There is a wooden boardwalk with a few steps through the snake and crocodile enclosure. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. It is Zulu custom for unmarried women to be topless.
