Journey into the heart of The Gambia’s natural beauty with a guided visit to Abuko Nature Reserve, located about fourteen miles from the pier. This protected sanctuary offers lush vegetation, peaceful forest trails, and an impressive variety of wildlife.
Abuko is a renowned bird-watching destination, home to more than 270 species. With help from your expert guide, watch for colorful residents such as the violet turaco and the red-bellied paradise flycatcher while learning about their behavior and habitats.
The reserve also shelters a range of mammals. Look for vervet monkeys leaping through the canopy, listen for bushbucks moving quietly through the undergrowth, and keep an eye on the waterways where the elusive West African manatee may occasionally appear.
Your visit includes time at the Abuko Nature Reserve Visitor Centre, featuring informative displays and exhibits that highlight local conservation efforts and the region’s unique ecosystems.
You will also explore the Animal Orphanage, where rehabilitating animals—including hyenas, baboons, and tortoises—are cared for in secure enclosures.
