The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ibiza's Upper Town D’alt Vila boasts five entrances. The main gate is situated in the fishing district of La Marina. You will pass through the gatehouse leading to the Patio de Armas, once the site of a huge and famous hippie market. Pass through a second gate leading to the Plaça de Vila Square, from where you will set out on a walking tour to discover the town.
Visit the bastion with its wonderful view over many Ibizan landmarks -- the bay, the New Town, the beach, the salt pits, and the island of Formentera. On your walk, you will see the ancient convent of the Dominicans (now the Town Hall) and the 14th-century cathedral. Your guide will also point out the Episcopal Palace, the Bishop's Residence, the Archaeological Museum (housed in the old university building), abandoned government buildings, the Governor's house, and former military buildings.
Watch for the Contemporary Art Museum, located in an old warehouse. Its arms room dates back to the 18th century. Your guide will point out the chapel of Sant Ciriac whose entrance, according to legend, the Cataláns used to conquer the city in 1235. During your walking tour, enjoy a refreshment at the Club Nautico.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes. The walking tour involves paved paths with cobblestones.
