The Pied-de-Vent Cheese Factory houses a cottage industry that uses raw milk to produce tasty cheese and Tomme des Demoiselles semi-hard cow's-milk cheese.
Further down the road, Chemin Pointe-Basse is a route peppered with many examples of traditional local architecture — simple houses and barns are quite simple and painted in a variety of bright colors. Acadian, French and New England influences are evident in the enclosed porches, corbels, verandas, and shingles.
Only an island in the North Atlantic could boast a smoked herring museum. Economuseum Fumoir d'Antan — a typical smokehouse — brings to life the last vestige of what was once a very important industry, used for three generations to smoke herring and mackerel.
The Echouerie Lighthouse offers a spectacular view over grey cliffs, Plaisance Bay and Entry Island. It has changed little since its construction in 1928.
The roadside rest area at Dune-du-Sud gives access to a beautiful beach. Red cliffs sculpted by the sea shelter one side of the beach with many holes and caves to explore.
Notes:
Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm in Cap-aux-Meules. Transportation is by school bus; participants must be able to climb steep steps to (dis)embark the bus. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any operational surprises that may crop up. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
